Dimensions: 57 x 80.5 cm

Good condition
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium

Ivan Ivanovitch Shishkin's style was based on analytical studies of nature, that helped him to approach reality and to transform it into his canvas. The present depiction of a stream in the forest corresponds to the characteristic, slightly loose brushwork of the Russian landscape painter.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. The board is laid down on canvas and shows light marks along the edges, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals a few scattered areas of retouching. The board measures 57 x 80.5 cm. The frame has a few marks with small losses of material and measures 64.5 x 88.5 cm.

Ivan Ivanovitch Shishkin (1832-1898)
Shishkin began his artistic training at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Moscow, followed by further studies at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts which also rated among the best art schools in pre-revolutionary Russia. After completing his studies in 1865, he was able to continue to work as an academy lecturer and finally as professor. Shishkin spent some time abroad, including stays in Switzerland and in Germany (Dresden and Dusseldorf). After his return he became a member of the famous Peredwischniki artist’s association and the Society of Russian Watercolorists. During his lifetime, Shishkin was represented with works at the World Exhibitions in Paris (1867), Vienna (1873) and Paris (1878). He is widely renowned as a painter of natural landscapes, draftsman and lithographer. (cbo)
