Description
AMERICAN CARVED AND PAINTED ARCHITECTURAL FIGURE, the manner of William Rush, a powerful depiction of a bare-breasted female in flowing gown, her head turned to the side with mouth open, likely to receive the mouthpiece of a long trumpet which would have been held in her proper right hand extending from her outstretched arm (now absent). Retains early, possibly original, paint-decorated surface. Together with a modern custom-made wooden pedestal base for display. Said to have been removed from a public building in Rhode Island. First half 19th century. 69" HOA (figure). 17" H (pedestal base).
Both arms, section of hair (bun), and portions of feet missing. Areas to old repair to robe and feet. Possible minor touch-up to chest and face.
