VERY SCARCE IN 1ST EDITION (1894) there was a printing in 1895 & there have been many reprints since. Thaxter's charmingly astute reflections on gardening and nature on an island off the coast of New Hampshire. All Twelve (12) plates with tissue-guards and ten (10) headpieces, all printed in color, by Childe Hassam are present; as is an inserted garden plan with list of flowers. This first edition of 1894 totaled only 1,019 copies in both the American and English issues. In addition many copies have been destroyed for the Hassam plates as they can sell unframed for $300-$500 each. Celia Thaxter's father had opened a hotel on Appledore Island in the Isles of Shoals off the Maine coast in 1848; and it soon became the center of a summer colony that included numerous writers and artists, including Childe Hassam. Thaxter & Hassam subsequently became lovers. Mrs. Thaxter, herself a well-known poet, managed the hotel for many years. This book, first published a few months before her sudden death, is a lyric, detailed account of her celebrated tiny but splendid garden. The fame of the book, however, derives principally from the glowing colors of Hassam's plates and decorations. [See BAL 19923 and Bennett,p. 104.]."
