Detailed Description

Provenance: Editions by Allan Frumkin Gallery, Chicago; owned by descent, New York.

Roberto Matta (Chilean, 1911-2002)

Matta was born in 1911 in Santiago de Chile. He studied architecture in Chile and later moved to Paris where he worked for Le Corbusier. He travelled extensively across Europe and became acquainted with Federico García Lorca, Salvador Dalí and André Breton. It was Breton who declared him to be a Surrealist, and Matta felt a real connection to this group of artists. Initially, he only contributed editorial on architecture in a surrealistic magazine, but later started painting himself in 1938 and quickly became a part of the great Surrealism Exhibition in Paris. To avoid the war, Matta moved to New York, where he was very quickly accepted as an artist. He returned to Europe in 1948, moving to Rome. Most of Matta’s drawings show his political influences.
