Casas Grande Early Ramos Polychrome Bowl
Casas Grande Early Ramos Polychrome Bowl
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, Ramos, ca. 1100 to 1200 CE. Enormous polychrome Casas Grandes pottery bowl of the early Ramos or possibly Babicora painting style as the designs painted in red and black do not touch. The body boasts an upper band of lovely stepped and linear forms. Size: 11" W x 5.5" H (27.9 cm x 14 cm)

The Babicora tradition is an outgrowth of the late Viejo period painting styles. In contrast, the later Ramos style in which red paint is outlined in black appears to be an intrusive style, possibly derived from Mimbres Polychrome. Babicora was produced via the same techniques as Ramos Polychrome; however, Babicora is believed to be a precursor to Ramos Polychrome.

Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.
