Description
Mangbetu people, African (Democratic Republic of Congo or Zaire), 20th century. Mangbetu hand carved and polychrome figural bow harp or kundi stringed musical instrument with figural form on neck, woman depicted with dotted accents on face, twisted wire hoop earrings, wire ornament on body ,arms laid straight at sides, five wooden pegs to adjust five strings connected to shaped incurvate body with red and black polychrome geometric triangular pattern on animal hide, concentric wire caps on corners of body. Unmarked. Instrument supported on metal stand supported on a black plinth base. Overall (including base) approximate height 18.4", width 21", depth 7". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Calvin Wayne McLarin, Atlanta, Georgia.
Condition
Wear to body and tuning pegs, and some abrasions and minor paint losses to body commensurate with age and use.
