Item Details
Description
Berenice Abbott (American, 1898-1991) "Fruit Market, Miami, Florida" (From Route I Series)- circa 1954, gelatin silver print mounted to artist's board, initialed in graphite at lower right "Ba", photographer's stamp on reverse "Original Photograph Berenice Abbott Abbott Village, Maine". A figural photograph from the artist's Route 1 Series capturing a roadside fruit stand nestled under a vine-draped banyan tree off of the so-called Dixie Highway in Miami, Florida. Overall approximately 8" x 10". Image size approximately 7.325" x 9.425". Note: Berenice Abbott was an important American photographer best known for her social documentation of New York life and architecture. Her exceptionally long career--which began in Greenwich Village, New York City--took her to Europe where she was hired by Man Ray (American (active France), 1890-1976) as a dark room assistant in 1923. Through Man Ray, Abbott was introduced to Eugene Atget who instilled in the photographer an interest in urban landscapes and architecture that would form the arch of her career. Abbott returned to the United States in 1929 and began her work documenting the changing landscape of urban New York (work that would culminate in the Changing New York project, completed in 1939). In the summer of 1954 Abbott and two friends set out to drive the expanse of Route 1 along the eastern coast of the United States. Abbott documented that trip in over 2,400 negatives taken as far south as Miami, Florida and as far north as Maine.
