Description
A Fabergé silver and guilloché enamel photograph frame, Moscow, circa 1899-1908. Circular in form, enameled in translucent lavender over a sunburst engine turned ground, with a ribbon-tied reeded border, the circular aperture with beaded bezel and surmounted with a bow knot, the opening enclosed with beveled glass, the wood back with shaped gilded silver strut; containing an original portrait photograph of Countess Alexandra Dmitrievna Tolstaya dressed as a 17th-century boyarina for the famous 1903 Winter Palace Ball. Diameter 3 7/8 in. (9.8 cm). Countess Alexandra Dmitrievna Tolstaya (1883-?) was the youngest daughter of Count Dmitry Pavlovich Tolstoy, who was Master of Ceremonies at the Imperial Court and Full State Councillor. She was a lady-in-waiting to both Maria Feodorovna and Alexandra Feodorovna. She married Viktor Ivanovich Katarzhi (1882-1932), an officer in the Life Guards Hussars Regiment, in 1914. He died in 1932, apparently in exile. Her fate is unknown.
