Roman North African Redware Oil Lamp
Roman North African Redware Oil Lamp
Item Details
Description
Rome, North Africa, ca. 400 to 500 CE. This is a redware oil lamp, one of the most ubiquitous artifacts from the Roman world -- they functioned essentially as light bulbs do for us today! This one is interesting, however, because of its artwork, which depicts a saint ringed by various designs including what appear to use to be heart shapes. This was a symbol that was not in use in the Roman world -- at least not the way we think of it today! Instead, the shapes are probably seeds of the silphium, a now-extinct plant that was common in the Roman world. Size: 5.2" L x 3.25" W x 2.2" H (13.2 cm x 8.3 cm x 5.6 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL
