Item Details
Description
North America, United States, John Carroll (American, 1892-1959), "Katherine Schmidt" (lithograph), 1940 CE. A stunning lithograph portrait of the early 20th century American artist Katherine Schmidt by her contemporary, the American artist John Carroll, with signature at lower left in plate, also signed on the lower right - edition 30, no 13. Carroll is known for his paintings of sad-eyed and rather mysterious women. During the 1920s, Carroll was hailed as a promising up-and-coming modernist. Although commonly associated with New York and Detroit, he grew up in San Francisco where he studied at Mark Hopkins Art Academy (1902-1906) and University of California, Berkeley (early 1910s). He also studied with Frank Duveneck in Cincinnati before serving in WWI. After the war, Carroll lived in New York City and Woodstock where he quickly became linked to the Ash Can School artists. Carroll had solo exhibitions at the esteemed Daniel and the Rehn galleries in the 1920s. Katherine Schmidt, the subject of this piece, exhibited her work in the New York scene throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Schmidt first attended the Art Students League in New York at the age of thirteen. After high school she worked with Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League where she met the artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi to whom she was married for thirteen years. Her oeuvre included painstakingly delineated landscapes and still lives as well as portrayals of the unemployed and the homeless. By 1939 Schmidt grew dissatisfied with her work and refused to show her work in solo exhibitions until 1961. It was at this time that she accidentally landed upon a new subject for her work. After tossing a crumpled piece of paper towel upon a table, she looked back to find a "beautiful piece of paper lying there." Her late still lifes are realistic depictions of discarded papers and dead leaves. A superb portrait of this unique artist by a her contemporary. Simply marvelous! Size: image measures 8.25" L x 6.5" W (21 cm x 16.5 cm); sheet size 11.75" L x 10" W (29.8 x 25.4 cm)
