Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. This is an interestingly-shaped vessel, a large kero (quero) with a conical shape terminating in a slightly flared, flat foot. The designs include colored chevrons -- cream, reds, oranges, greens/blues -- around the exterior of the rim and a solid red foot the same color as the undecorated interior. The rest of the body is covered with freewheeling designs -- what appears to be a fish or lizard design, repeated in different colors. Some researchers have seen echoes of architectural decoration in Huari ceramics (like those chevrons), so this may have been inspired by the walls of a temple! Size: 6.45" W x 8.25" H (16.4 cm x 21 cm)

Provenance: Ex-California Museum of Ancient Art
