Description
Description: Important Circa 1870s Lot of 2 CDV (carte-de-visite) Photographs; Scarce identified photographs of businessmen associated with the Singer Sewing Machine Company and Agents Milford & Lidgerwood of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Portrait of three gentlemen. Identified, "Rader", "Andrade", and "Hargreaves". In this photograph is displayed an advertisement broadside for the Singer Manufacturing Company of New York and Milford & Lidgerwood. Research indicates that Milford & Lidgerwood were agents for the Singer Company in Brazil. Presumably these three men in the photograph worked for the agency. Period ink on the reverse also identifies these men along with location and date; "Rio de Janeiro, Brazil" and "October 1872". Photograph is by Insley Pacheco, who studied with the great photographers, Gurney and Brady. The other is a portrait of Julius A. Rader. Nice period ink manuscript inscription on the reverse, from Rader to his mother (S. M. Rader) in Chester, South Carolina - September 19th, 1867. (See scans.) Research indicates that Julius A. Rader emigrated to Brazil, dissatisfied with the conditions after the Civil War, where he became a successful businessman.
