William Scott (1913-1989)
Born in Greenock, Scotland, the painter began to study at the Belfast College of Art in 1928. In 1931 he joined the sculpture class at the Royal Academy Schools in London and graduated in 1935. In his painting work he initially focused on still lifes of objects that are simple but contrasting in shape which he arranged in front of plain backgrounds. So from 1952 to 1954 he came to complete abstraction. A trip to the US and the encounter with the painters Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline aroused his awareness of European painting tradition, leaving him temporarily work again representational. In the late 1960s originated still lifes, in which William Scott combined simple items such as pots and pans with purely abstract forms. (fea)
