Baron, a Holocaust survivor, found solace in making intimate assemblages that were personal and poetic. This particular collage with its geometric blocks of color is more painterly in its formal composition than many of her other collages.
Hannelore Baron (American, b. Germany, 1926-1987)
Renowned for her abstract collages and box constructions of highly personal nature, self-taught artist Hannelore Baron gained much critical acclaim throughout her career. Born in Germany, Baron and her family settled in New York in 1941. Plagued by claustrophobia and depression, she turned to artmaking in the 1950s and held her first solo exhibition in 1969. In 1995, Baron’s work was the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Her work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Israel Museum.
