Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 600 to 900 CE. An elaborately carved and burnished brownware tripod pottery bowl of a classic form standing upon three crenelated legs, each with a central cross-like form surrounded by four horizontal notches, probably a reference to stars in the celestial realm. The outer walls are impressively adorned with well-defined hieroglyphic badges in three cartouches, each glyph depicting a sinuous form with what appears to be a bird head, perhaps a reference to the Mayan feathered or plumed serpent deity Kukulkan (perhaps better known by the Aztec term Quetzalcoatl). Given the abstract nature of this glyph, an alternative reading may be that of the Mayan ocean or sea glyph known as Polaw. Size: 8.875" W x 4.25" H (22.5 cm x 10.8 cm)
