Description: Two Japanese Girls with their Emperor & Empress Dolls. The seated girl is Maeko and the standing one Geisha. Girl's day is in March. Stands of imperial dolls and paper and wood palace doll houses known as Goten were displayed. Because the girls of 14 were made Geisha by the means of Misuage (deflowering to the highest bidder) they were still children and were allowed to enjoy the Hina Matsuri Festival. In this case the Maeko is probably 10 and the Geisha 15 - 16 years of age. Japan. c1880.
