Item Details

Description

Near East, Syria, Chalcolithic, ca. 4th Millennium BCE. A carved basalt stone altar of a graceful, waisted cylindrical form, also referred to as a pillar image, the top recessed to create a shallow basin, one side with an anthropomorphic visage with a large beaked nose, small protruding round eyes, and flanking lugs for ears. This is an extremely rare piece of visual culture that was probably used as a home altar. A very similar example sold at Christie's, New York in 2010 for $13,750 in 2010 (10 June 2010, Sale 2323, lot 1). Size: 8.75" in diameter at widest x 11" H (22.2 cm x 27.9 cm)
