Item Details
Description
Luristan, modern day Iran, ca. 1000 to 700 BCE. This is a bronze standard with the Janus-featured god Sraosha grasping the necks of two rampant lions depicted at the top. The bottom is a narrow bell-shape. Intriguingly, there is writing on the side of the bell shape that says "Lu 46" as if this is a deaccessioned museum piece, but unfortunately we have not been able to find out that information. Sraosha, a Zoroastrian deity, would have played a major role in Luristan religion. Size: 10.6" L x 2.6" W x 1.4" H (26.9 cm x 6.6 cm x 3.6 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages. Ex-Christie's, 9-23-98, lot 246, #1.
