In 1906 he enrolled at the Brera Academy in Milan, studying with Caesar Heel, influenced by the Italian Divisionism combined with the tradition of Lombard Naturalism of the nineteenth century. In 1908 he met Boccioni and Russolo with whom, two years later, he signed the 'Manifesto of Futurist Painters' and 'Technical Manifesto of Futurist Painting'. With Soffici he contributed to the futurist magazine 'Lacerba'. Returning to Paris in 1914, he met Apollinaire and Picasso, and Nizia to experiment with collage and 'free speech'. In 1917 he met de Chirico in Ferrara adopting the techniques of composition and iconography metaphysics in a series of interior and still life. In 1918 he collaborated with Alberto Savinio and others at the magazine Plastic Values. Its theoretical positions, based on the 'return to order' after the war, was marking a break with the classicism of de Chirico.
Took part in two group exhibitions twentieth century and in 1933 was among the signatories of the 'Manifesto of Mural Painting'. In 1941 he was appointed Professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera and in 1945 published the autobiography 'My Life'.
