Description
FRENCH OFFICER'S MASCOT DOG COLLAR
Very large steel and leather dog collar, ca. 1875, once worn by perhaps a mastiff owned by a French military officer. The collar, about 7" dia. and 1 1/2" wide, is adjustable in size and would have been secured to the beast with a lock as a loop is supplied for that purpose. The collar is studded all around, and a ring is fitted to which a leash would have been attached. The collar is engraved with the owner's name and location: " LT. BAILLIERE 22E DRAGOONS SEDAN". Very good. Of course, it's entirely possible that this dog was present at the Battle of Sedan during the Franco-Prussian War.
