(1760 - 1844) French linguist and philosopher, aide to von Steuben, joined the American Philosophical Society in 1791 and served as its president of it from 1827 until his death, famous for his analysis of languages of the American Indians. Scarce A.E.S. on the verso of a partly-printed promissory note, 4pp. legal folio, July 16, 1808. Loss at one corner not affecting text or signature.
