Description
Rookwood Double Vellum with freesia decoration made for Bankers Life Company in Des Moines, Iowa with artwork done by Kataro Shirayamadani in 1939. Marks include the company logo, the date, shape number 614 D and the incised artist's cypher. Painted on the bottom is the notation Bankers Life Company Angie Mongar 1923-1938. Height 10 3/8 inches. Uncrazed and very clean. In 1930, Bankers Life began a program to award employees with 10, 15 and 20 years of service, a decorated Rookwood vase with each 5 year increment warranting a larger vase. Apparently the program with Rookwood lasted until at least 1939 since our vase is the award to Angie Mongar for 15 years of service. We will include a photocopy of a Bankers Life internal publication discussing the program. Please note that the black paint added by Bankers Life is not fired on and will come off if treated poorly. From the Berniece and Henry Blount collection.
