Description
Rookwood Limoges style lidded tea caddy with bat and spider decoration done by Albert Valentien in 1891. Channeling his best Maria Longworth Nichols sensibilities, Valentien has given us a fun view of nature with several branches and berries to make the effect a bit less scary. With lots of fired on gold, the piece looks to be 10 years earlier than the noted date. Impressed marks include the Rookwood logo, which indicates the date, shape number 96, G for ginger clay. Faint incised marks include the artist's initials and W for white (clear) glaze. Height 6 3/4 inches. Excellent condition save for a 1/2 inch chip on the interior rim which is covered by the lid.
Condition
1/2 inch chip on inside rim of caddy
