Item Details
Description
View of Paris.
Theodore Jung (1803-1865).
Watercolor on paper.
Monogrammed on lower left "Th. J." .
23 x 36 inches sheet,
44 1/2 x 32 inches framed. This beautiful watercolor view was originally believed to be taken from Mont Valérien, about two kilometers west of the city, but was more likely taken from a hill on the right bank of the Seine, near present-day Place D’Iéna in the 16 éme Arrondissement, which was outside the city limits at the time. The verdant, almost pastoral quality of the foreground reminds us that 19th-century Paris was certainly not as developed as it is today. However, a number of well-known landmarks in the city skyline are featured in the painting, including the majestically imposing Hôtel des Invalides across the Seine on the left bank, the Église Saint-Sulpice with the Panthéon directly further behind it, and the Cathédrale de Notre Dame faintly visible further off in the distance.
