Arte Povera

Arte Povera (English ‘poor art’) was an art movement that began in the late 1960s in Italy, more precisely at the Galleria La Bertesca in Genoa, where in September 1967 the exhibition ‘Arte Povera e IM Spazio’ was held. For this exhibition, art critic and curator Germano Celant wrote a manifesto describing Arte Povera as turning away from iconographic conventions as well as from the traditional language of symbols. Arte povera turns trivial objects into works of art, whereby poverty of material and poverty of technical means are the main characteristics. With raw, simple materials such as felt, plants, rocks, etc., objects are being designed, the so-calledarchetypes. Among the protagonists of the Arte Povera were the Italians Alighiero Boetti, Luciano Fabro, Pino Pascalli and the Greek Jannis Kounellis. Joseph Beuys for example, also experimented with the style of Arte povera. (nlu)
