Description
Richard Stockton (1730-1781, lawyer, Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey, for which he was imprisoned by the British) Autograph document signed, Middlesex Co. Court of Common Pleas, January, 1765, in which Stockton sues Stephen Warne for a debt owed his client, Ezekiel Forman; 1 1/2 pp., 13 X 8 1/4 in.Warne (c.1700-c.1765) was eldest son of one of the original proprietors of East Jersey, but by 1765 had squandered most of his fortune. Forman (1747-1828) was a large scale planter and slaveholder in Freehold, NJ. He was a Loyalist during the war, then went into legal practice in Philadelphia. In 1790, moved with his family and 65 slaves to Natchez.
Condition
Weakening horizontal folds and one vertical fold towards the right. Some losses around edges and uneven toning. The paper rather fragile.
