Description
An Egyptian painted wood panel, Late Period, c. 712 - 30 BC, from a sarcophagus, within the uppermost register the god Sobek stands beside a mummy lying atop a bier, three of the four canopic jars that accompanied the deceased into his tomb on the ground below. A decorative border at the bottom of the register separates it from three vertical columns of text, the outermost with a greenish background, the central in white. 19 in x 8 1/4 in (48.2 x 20.9 cm). Some losses to the paint, but an attractive piece and custom mounted within a lucite box with linen back, a wire for suspension on the back. Ex Alex Malloy, 1980.
