Jade. China, presum. Neolithic Liangzhu Culture (approx. 3300 - 2200 BC)
Medium-sized bi disc, carved out of a highly altered green and russet coloured jade; the central hole, drilled from both sides, was left unpolished with a small ridge in the middle.
The surface of the disc is mottled and almost entirely covered with a white patina due to alteration of the stone. The effect is somehow similar to that observed on the disc Lot AK616-101, though here the patina is shinier, virtually hiding the original green and russet colour of the jade which can be seen on the border of the disc that was not affected by the alteration.
A Liangzhu culture bi disc of a somewhat similar colour from the Arthur M. Sackler collection has been auctioned at Christie’s New York (Sale 2268, 18 March 2009, Lot 284,

Jades nos. 92 - 121 were examined by Univ. Prof. Filippo Salviati, declared to be authentic and dated by critical evaluation of their origin.
Salviati is a professor of Chinese art at the oriental faculty of the university „La Sapienza“ in Rome and one of the most renowned experts in the field of jades worldwide, specialized in archaic jades of all eras up to the Song dynasty. All images of jades on our website can be enlarged to high detail. Work by hand, signs of age, weathering and colour can be recognized in these images.
