Terracotta with painting. China, Tang Dynasty (618 - 905)
A horse maintained in the original state from an excavational site. The steed is very naturalistically spirited, also the slender legs are nicely executed in movement. The mouth is open revealing teeth; the animal gazes curiously at the ground. The mane, which was once inserted of natural hair, is worn due to age. The saddle belts are painted black; also a saddlecloth, as rest traces indicate. Completely preserved is the bound, short tail. Opening for firing is on the belly side.
