Terracotta with painting. China, Tang Dynasty (618 - 905), TL-tested


An exceptional piece of its art due to the powerfully spirited depicition, rarity and authentic condition! The long-legged steed stands on three legs, one is raised, all are slimly designed. The advanced civilization of the Tang Period was a time of prosperity in horse breeding as well as in female horsemanship. The lady in the saddle here is seated like a man, with fashionable hat, finely executed features of her full-cheeked face, while the hands were not included (original!). Very animated is the steed´s head, tilted somewhat to the side, with open mouth and pointed ears. Bridle and saddle belt are painted black-grey; saddlecloth with red blossom ornament. A very small firing opening on the belly side. This terracotta was examined for age through TL-analysis – see comment.
