Description

Rare Large Nodding Lion Automaton, c. 1910
With hide-covered papier-mâché body modeled in lifelike walking stance with detailed musculature, leather tail, tawny mane, green glass eyes, articulated head and hinged jaw with celluloid teeth, ht. 19 ½ in. (50 cm) x lg. 32 in. (82 cm), repair on left foreleg, right eye cracked (but stable). With fixed brass key. The torso houses an open-spring movement with horizontal anchor escapement connected via a rod to the weighted head, allowing the lion to nod for several hours. A very impressive automaton nodder, remarkable in this large size.

Mit Fell überzogener Korpus aus Papiermaché, lebensecht modelliert mit ausgeprägter Muskulatur, Schwanz aus Leder, gelbbraune Mähne, grüne Glasaugen, beweglicher Kopf und Unterkiefer mit Zähnen aus Zelluloid, Höhe 50 cm, Länge 82 cm. Linke Pfote repariert, Riß im rechten Auge (aber stabil). Fest eingesetzter Stahl-Schlüssel, Federwerkantrieb im Korpus, Ankerhemmung, gewichteter Kopf. Der Löwe nickt für einige Stunden mit dem Kopf und öffnet dabei sein Maul. Ein, besonders in dieser Größe, beeindruckender Wackelautomat.
