(American/German, 1899-1985)
Port Clyde (Maine), 1953; New England Harbor, signed lower left "Drewes" and signed verso with artist's device, dated, numbered "697", oil on canvas, 23 x 30 in.; gilt wood frame,. Condition: original stretcher and tacking edge; frame with abrasions. Provenance: Private Collection, Atlanta, Georgia; Notes: Werner Drewes studied at the Bauhaus in Germany under Wassily Kandinsky, whose influence is reflected in his abstractions. Drewes was one of the first artists to introduce concepts of the Bauhaus school within the United States, most significantly, and for our purposes, at the 1936 Group exhibition, Société Anonyme, Black Mountain College, Black Mountain, North Carolina. Brunk Auctions would like to thank Karen Drewes Seibert for her assistance in cataloguing this painting. It will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's works being compiled by Werner Drewes Fine Art.
