A FINE ENGLISH PARIAN WARE BUST OF ROBERT BURNS (SCOTTISH POET 1759-1796, BY ROBINSON AND LEADBEATER (1865-1924), IMPRESSED AND INCISED MARKS, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, nicely detailed with head turned slightly dexter and wearing traditional late 18th century attire, truncated at the shoulders and raised on a circular parian ware socle, reversing to impressed, "BURNS," and incised oval cartouche enclosing, "R&L." Height: 19 5/8" NOTE: Frederick Robinson and Edward Leadbetter, two Englishmen relatively unknown but produced fine pure white parian wares that only Minton could be said to be of comparable quality. They opened in 1865 after buying the firm of Giovanni Meli along with the parian molds and hired Roland Morris as Chief Designer. By 1893, it was noted in "The Pottery Gazette" that their two factories at Stoke were the sole concerns left that produced parian exclusively. This was part of their eventually having to close their doors in 1924 but left us with such a high quality of parian, that it set the standard.
