Catalogue Note: Born in rural New York, Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) would go on to become an iconic artist of the 20th century. After study at Columbia University, Kent went on to learn under two other iconic 20th-century American artists based in New York City, William Merrit Chase and Robert Henri. He exhibited widely throughout his career, gaining much recognition, but he is perhaps best known for his signature illustrations of various literary classics. Politically active throughout his life, Kent was blacklisted by HUAC under Senator Joseph McCarthy, for his Communist Party affiliations. Kent's standing has increased in recent years with renewed critical attention, and his work is represented today in some of the country's most prestigious institutions.
