National Institute of Arts & Letters Membership Certificate. The National Institute of Arts and Letters was founded in 1898 to further literature and fine arts in the United States, and is the parent body of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Its membership is limited to 250 at any given time, and its ranks have included Eugene O'Neil, Woodrow Wilson, Ralph Ellison, Ezra Pound, and H.L. Mencken. In 1970, Duke Ellington was elected as one of the institute's members and received this certificate.
