Description
Late 19th- early 20th century AD. A mixed bronze group comprising: two leaf-shaped with calligraphic text, wire handle and loop to the reverse; one scaphoid with calligraphic text, cast loop; one leaf-shaped with spiral motif; one a pair of feet with rosettes and loop handle. From a large London collection; formed between 1980-late 1990s. The conch and feet motifs are often associated with the god Vishnu, specifically in his form as Krishna. The conch, or shanka is blown by Vishnu to destroy ignorance and evil influences and symbolizes his power. It also represents the cosmos and the sound of a conch when blown is likened to the sound Aum that preceded all of creation at the Big Bang. The feet of Hindu gods are known as padma, or lotus, and the placing of the feet of the deity onto the head of the devotee enables the power and grace of the god to pass through the body. 180 grams total, 34-69mm (1 1/4 - 2 3/4").
