Large 19th C. Suzani Textile, ex-Queen Elena of Italy
Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, or Kazakhstan, ca. 19th century CE. A large and impressive, hand embroidered Suzani textile of a classic pomegranate design, comprised of red, gold, green, teal, and royal blue silk and cotton threads upon a golden ochre ground with an embroidered border comprised of two interweaving teal green, sinuous lines (resulting in a diamond pattern), all mounted upon a lustrous, cream-hued silk fabric, once the property of Her Majesty Queen Elena of Italy. Size: 90" L x 56" H (228.6 cm x 142.2 cm)

Traditionally Suzanis were created by Central Asian brides as part of their dowry to be presented to their groom on the wedding day as an esteemed token of devotion to their betrothed. The word Suzani is derived from the Persian "Suzan" which translates as needle. The fine art of creating such textiles is known as "Suzandozi" or needlework. According to scholars, the oldest surviving Suzanis extend to the late 18th and early 19th centuries; however, they were most likely initially created long before. The early 15th century writings of one Ruy Gonzáles de Clavijo, the Castillian ambassador to the court of Timur (Tamerlane), includes detailed descriptions of embroideries that scholars believe to be forerunners of Suzani textiles. This piece is among the favorites of Queen Elena's descendants.

In November of 2011, Christie's London featured the jewelry collection of Queen Elena in an auction of Italian Royal Jewelry. To our knowledge, her textiles have never been up for auction. Beyond this is the indisputable artistry and unrivaled technique demonstrated by this piece!

Queen Elena was the former queen of Italy married to King Vittorio Emanuele III and the mother of King Umberto II. Formerly Princess Elena, daughter of Prince Nicholas of Montenegro, she was born on June 8, 1873. On October 24, 1896, she married the then Prince of Naples. Three weeks prior to her marriage, Princess Elena was received into the Roman Catholic faith from the Orthodox church. This caused some distress on the part of her mother who refused to attend the wedding ceremony in Rome.

Due to the Fascist conquest of Ethiopia in 1936 and Albania in 1939, Queen Elena briefly used the claimed titles of Empress of Ethiopia and Queen of Albania; both titles were dropped when her husband formally renounced them in 1943.

Queen Elena stayed away from politics for the most part. Her only intervention of any significance was when she urged the King to press Mussolini for the creation of an independent Kingdom of Montenegro in 1941 as her homeland had previously been absorbed by Yugoslavia after World War I. The Queen also intervened, after the German takeover of former Italian areas, to obtain the release of Prince Michael of Montenegro from German captivity after he refused to collaborate with the Nazis. She was, alongside her husband, as a result of the war briefly Queen of Albania and Empress of Ethiopia but these titles were renounced in 1943.

She influenced her husband to lobby Benito Mussolini, Prime Minister of Italy, for the creation of the independent Kingdom of Montenegro in 1941. In 1943 she subsequently obtained the release from a German prison of her nephew, Prince Michael of Montenegro, and his wife, Geneviève. Prince Michael had been imprisoned after refusing to become King of Montenegro under the protection of Italy.

Queen Elena was known for her "years of devotion to good works," especially to the "promotion and welfare of underprivileged children." She believed it was important -- her divine right -- "to nurse and raise her own children." She and her husband had five children: Princess Jolanda (1901), Princess Mafalda (1903), Prince Umberto (1904), Princess Giovanna (1907) and Princess Maria in 1914. Queen Elena also founded the first nursing school in Italy and studied nursing herself in order to elevate the profession.

The King and Queen had a very happy marriage, the couple were very devoted to each other and the King would bring his wife roses from the garden every morning he collected himself. She was not totally without her detractors in Italy but she devoted herself to her new country, her people and her family. If there is one word to describe Queen Elena it is charitable. Almost her entire royal allowance, as soon as it was given, would be distributed by her amongst the poor. She was so generous in fact that the King could look quite stingy by comparison, something which was not lost on the Italian monarch. By nature a practical and frugal man he remarked once that if he were not so careful about his money the Queen would reduce them to poverty by giving it all away to the poor.

Ultimately, as we know, the Italian monarchy did not long survive the end of the war and Queen Elena was forced into exile alongside her husband. She died in Montpelier, France on November 28, 1952 at the age of 79.

Provenance: Property of Her Majesty Queen Elena of Italy, wife of His Majesty King Victor Emanuel III; acquired by descent from H.M. Queen Giovanna of Bulgaria, nee Princess of Savoy (Italy) to Maria Luisa of Bulgaria
