American, attributed to Heywood Wakefield, circa 1890s.  A Victorian photographers wicker recamier (also known as a posing chair for photographers) in black paint (recent) having a heart shaped back and scrolling curls enclosing a basket weave with central pattern and over a double-scrolled arm to one end and a downscrolled end to the other with woven seat and ornate scroll work and woven spindles on slightly splayed legs united by a cross stretcher. Approximate height 37", width 38", seat depth 16", seat height 16.25".
Note: In America, wicker became popular when Massachusetts grocer Cyrus Wakefield saw that ships returning to Boston from China discarded the reeds they used to protect their cargo. Wakefield recycled the material into furniture, which originally was used indoors, and founded the Wakefield Rattan Co. in South Reading, Mass. (later renamed Wakefield in his honor).
