German, ealy 20th century. Occupational bier stein, transfer decorated porcelain with hand colored elements,inscribed at neck "Eher soll die Welt verderben, als vor Durst ein Fleischer sterben"and "1/2 L.", inscribed on body "Hoch lebe das edle handwerk der Metzger", inscribed indistinctly on lid "Hans Hufnugel, 1900", with indistinct impression to interior. Porcelain half liter bier stein (or beer mug) with pewter lid depicting elaborate butcher scene with two butchers beheading a steer (or cow) with pork (or pig) carcass handing from the ceiling, with two butchers flaying game, lid decorated with multiple patterned panels, with grape and grape leaf panel, with gadrooned panel, with c-sroll and foliate panel, with leaf panel, with small finial. Overall height approximately 9.75". Approximate diameter at mouth 3".
