Description
A gorgeous Faliscan black-figure phiale from the Vine-Phialai Group, c. 330 - 300 BC, a mesomphalos, decorated with interlacing vine leaves and dotted grape bunches around the central omphalos. D: 8 ½ in (21.7cm). An outstanding example of this classic Greek offering bowl seen held in the hand of various gods in statuary and on the back of coins. Cf. Similar phiale (Oxford 1925.670), J. Beazley, 'Etruscan Vase Painting', 1947, p.181, pl. XXXI.3. Ex Royal Athena Galleries, New York purchased at Christie's London Jan. 1998.
