Description
Holy Land, probably Jerusalem, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. This is an oil lamp from the Biblical period, a style known as Herodian. These lamps are closed, with a rounded body that was shaped on a potter's wheel. The nozzle was made separately and attached to the body, then the join was smoothed with a knife. Unlike Roman lamps from the same era, these Jewish-made lamps usually do not have decoration. Size: 4.4" L x 2.4" W x 1.75" H (11.2 cm x 6.1 cm x 4.4 cm).
