Description
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze discoid plaque with repousse design of a seated female with crescent headdress confronted by a mounted horseman with falx(?), large facing figure between. 3.28 grams, 39mm (1 1/2"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. The scene possibly represents the Thracian rider god with the Mother Goddess in front of him, sun and moon above and the bust of a male deity in the middle. The popularity of this cult spread through the Roman army after the conquest of Dacia by Trajan in the early second century AD. [No Reserve]
