Description
Third Intermediate Period, 1069-664 BC. A bifacial deep blue glazed composition amulet formed as eight wedjat eyes, pierced for suspension. 1.40 grams, 15mm (1/2"). From an early 20th century collection. The wadjet, or udjat, eye (literally 'the sound one') was later called the eye of Horus, after the eye of the falcon headed god Horus, which had been plucked out during one of his interminable battles with Seth, and then restored by Thoth. Horus was the later Greek Haroeris, the celestial falcon and great creator god, whose right eye was the sun, and whose left eye the moon, and is an ancient symbol of protection, royal power and good health.
