London writes to architect Gustav Behrnd regarding the construction of a barn at London's Glen Ellen ranch based on Behrnd's design. London expresses fairly practical concerns such as "what distance apart are the floor joists", placement of ladders to limit the labor required in feeding the horses "I see that a man to feed the horses, after putting them into their stalls, would have to walk practically the length of the barn to the outside ladder or to the stairway, and then would have to walk the length of the barn back again, across the hay-loft in order to throw feed down to the horses, and then would have to walk the length of the barn again in order to get down to the ground", the thickness of the concrete slab, and his desire for an expedient response from Behrnd "I think it would be expedient to send me answers to all the questions propounded in foregoing part of this letter. I am sending this letter in triplicate, to your various addresses." See "The Letters of Jack London" Volume I, pages 513-14.
