Description
JAPANESE IMARI PORCELAIN OCTAGONAL JAR WITH COVER, EDO PERIOD, H 30'', DIA 12":Octagonal shape with conforming cover centered by a gilded hawk finial perched on rockwork; decorated in underglaze blue and polychrome enamels with a scene of phoenix and trees, the shoulder and foot painted with lappet patterns enclosing cranes, plants and rabbits. No apparent markings. Edo period (1615-1868), probably circa 1700.

Condition
There is an old firing crack at the underside of the cover, approximately 2 1/2" long, and a 1 1/2" loss to the interior lip of the cover (not visible when the cover is in place); the hawk may have some restoration at the neck although it does not fluoresce under black light; a chipped flower at the rockwork; another small firing crack at the base of the finial.
