PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE SOUTHERN COLLECTION
The textured ovular dish with applied design including a figure on bull's back and cherry branch in bloom, both in silver, with an applied bronze pine branch. This tray is from a line of copperwares produced by Gorham during the 1881-1885 period. This particular line of wares featured a variety of smoking and desktop accessories in a variety of darker patinas and was marketed primarily to men. An almost identical example resides in the permanent collection of the Dallas Museum of Art and is featured on page 179 of Charles Venable's Silver in America 1840-1940: A Century of Splendor.
Condition
Some patination spotting, verdigris buildup to bronze relief, and around silver mounts, sticker residue to reverse, paint splotching, scuffing to underside, otherwise good condition.
