Henryk Berlewi (1894-1967)
Berlewi was a painter connected to the Constructivist movement. His complete oeuvre comprises paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, in Antwerp, at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in Berlin, where he made the acquaintance of El Lissitzky, Theo van Doesburg, Viking Eggeling and Hans Richter. Back in Poland, he joined the Constructivist group Blok. He was also a member of Jung Idysz. In 1924, he exhibited his paintings at the gallery Der Sturm and published the Mechano-Faktur manifest in Walden’s magazine. His abstract works, creating optical illusions, made him a father of Op art of the 1960s. (tm)
