Title: Detroit Free Press Lime Kiln Club Color Lithographed Advertising Sign
Place Published: New York
Publisher:H. Bencke
Date Published: c.1883
Description:
The lithograph is one of the variants of the Lime Kiln Club image at Paradise Hall in Detroit, this being an advertising sign to sell subscriptions to the Detroit Free Press. There are a number of images similar to this, one in particular advertises Dixon Stove polish, but is somewhat smaller in size. Here we see Brother Gardner extolling the virtues of the newspaper to the gathered African Americans, with the man sitting next to him taking subscriptions. The lettering at top reads "The Detroit Free Press And The Household $1.00 Per Year", and is lithographed by H. Bencke Lith. N.Y. with Roz, N.Y. signed in the stone. The sign measures 11½x15¼" with ¼" margins. Laid down on 16x20" cardboard backing.
Provenance: Bulkley Collection.
Condition
Laid down, otherwise appears in very good condition with no surface flaws.
