Recollections the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico from 1842-45, significant in the run-up to the Mexican War, and the U.S. relationship with Texas at the time. Raines 204; Sabin 95537. With ownership signature of General Levi C. Bootes to the front free endpaper. Bootes joined the U.S. Army in 1846 as a private, promoted to lieutenant during the Mexican-American War, was a captain by the outbreak of the Civil War, and was breveted a brigadier general after gallant leadership at Gettysburg. The spine lettering of the present copy states "3d Edition" though there is no internal indication. Formerly in the Wilmington Institute Free Library, with paper spine label, bookplate, brown paper label on rear endpaper, a few other markings.
