Item Details
Description
Byzantium (formerly Eastern Roman Empire, modern Turkey); Byzantine, ca. 7th to 12th century CE. A beautiful bronze Byzantine cross with flaring arms that terminate in pairs of circular knobs, engraved with concentric circles. This circular motif is repeated all over the front surface. The lower terminus was intended to be inserted or attached to a processional staff. A fine example with a beautifully aged surface and gorgeous green patina! Custom stand. Size: Cross itself measures 4-1/2" x 3-1/8" (11.4 x 7.9 cm); 5-3/4" (14.6 cm) high on stand

Byzantium was established when the fourth century Emperor Constantine, also known as Saint Constantine, Christianized the Roman Empire and pronounced Constantinople in Byzantium as the capital. The visual culture of this era demonstrates a synthesis of classical Greek, Roman, and Christian influences.

Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey collection acquired prior to 1980.
